Do you notify students when you have a Substitute Teacher?

Hi

I teach at a local community center one evening a week.

I usually only need a sub once every six months.

In the past when I would announce that I would be away and Mary would be teaching, hardly anyone would show up. Mary has a different teaching style however I would still like the students to attend to experience another teacher.

So, next week I am unable to teach my class and have a sub lined up. I didn't announce it last week, as I would like everyone to show up and experience the substitute teacher.

Ideas?

  • well, although you wan tthe students ot experienc eanothe r teacher they apparently wwant either youou or nothing or not Mary.

You may want whatever you wish fo r your students but they will choose what they want. It is just a yoga class.

Why not ask them what they wish you to do when you have to be gone?
It is likely that they are grown ups and can talk to you directly.
    • Yeah, I've run into this at times. I've gone to sub a class where no one showed up or just one or two students. I've also gotten feedback from a sub that not many people were there but not always. I always tell my students when I'm going to be away and, of course, tell them the benefit from experiencing another teacher. You can't always control these things but just to be open about why you would like them to still attend class. I teach at a community center and I'll ask my students about how the class was for them (if different sub than before). Then I get a sense of their experience/feedback and go from there. Then again I don't get a sub that often either. It's just one of those things.

      Thanks for sharing!
      • From anotrher perspective... when I was dancing regularly with one instructor and she was goen there was no on w whom I liked as a substitute.

I went often (over a period of 3 years) as she always told us when she would be gone and asked us to go to give her substitute support and practice at leadign a class.. After several times of not liking the substitute and having to pay for the class I decided that I woudl not go anymore uynless I liked the substitute.

had I been allowed to pay half to support the substitute I may have decided differently.

She always thanked us but somehow I felt that the substitute learned on our backs and from our wallets.
That is me being honest about my feelings.

Also I am a professional educator ( not typist) and at times with dance and yoga teachers ther is a gap between their movement skills and knowledge and their teaching skills and so I often have had to relax and accept that.
    • thank you for your ideas

I've thought of asking the class what they wanted, but find if I leave it open to them, not everyone would want the same thing.

I've encountered this before when I asked something and opened it up to the class. At the time other teachers suggest that I make a decision and go with it.

I've thought about rescheduling the class, as in offeriing a make up class yet the scheduling and availabilty or rooms is thin.

      Thaks for you input.
