Re: Does anyone here teach yoga full time for a living
Sun, June 8, 2008 - 2:33 PM....well, it depends on what you mean by full time? I quit my day job to teach, and am struggling with only 4 classes. I teach on my own as opposed to at a gym.
It is summer, so I am sure that is why all of my classes are slow.
I try to keep an open mind, and BREATHE!!!!!!

Re: Does anyone here teach yoga full time for a living
Mon, June 9, 2008 - 9:37 PMYoga is how i pay my part of the bills around here. I could not support a family on what i earn. I know very few yogis who are able to fully support themselves teaching yoga.
I work 30ish hours a week at yoga, practicing, studying, teaching, marketing, writing. My studio is on my home property so I don't commute. I love what I do and my students love what I do. "It's the best place in the world to be." (someone introduced themselves today in class and said this to another student :)) Lifestyle is wonderful. Your unlikely to get rich unless your a superstar.

Re: Does anyone here teach yoga full time for a living
Sun, June 22, 2008 - 9:29 AMThat is so great that you have your own studio right at home! Right now I teach at the University full time teaching both yoga and ethnic dance. I also teach yoga at our local gym in town. It is a full time job but I love what I do. I like connecting with my students and helping them release stress of everyday life. My goal is to have my own studio one day! The lifestyle is great, words can't even describe what a free form job(if I should even call it that)lol.

Re: Does anyone here teach yoga full time for a living
Tue, June 10, 2008 - 8:41 AMI don't make my living teaching yoga right now, but I make a good chunk of money teaching in addition to my full-time job. I teach two classes a week, and I have a few private clients that I see weekly. I make significant money from my private clients, less money from the classes. If I were to teach full-time (which I'd like to do at some point), I'd have to pick up several more private clients and a couple more classes, as well as teach a workshop or two every month. -

Re: Does anyone here teach yoga full time for a living
Mon, June 23, 2008 - 4:05 PMwithout getting too personal, what is the range of payment you accept for private lessons?
where do your clients come from?
what part of the country do you live in? -

Re: Does anyone here teach yoga full time for a living
Mon, June 23, 2008 - 5:19 PMThe going rate for private sessions in the Boston area is $125/hour if you go to their home, and $100/hour if they come to you. I'm sure this amount varies in other areas of the country, but I'm not familiar with rates outside of Boston. Some teachers offer package discounts if you buy multiple classes up-front.
Clients come mostly via word-of-mouth. Sometimes through friends, sometimes through other teachers, sometimes people in the group classes you teach will want private sessions.

Re: Does anyone here teach yoga full time for a living
Mon, June 23, 2008 - 8:33 PMI was recently at a therapeutic yoga workshop where we talked about this. Most of us were from small towns in the Pacific Northwest, rates for yoga classes are lower in these towns than in the cities. Group classes generally range from $10 to $15/class. The cost of privates among this group ranged from $40 to $85. The person who charged the lowest was trying to do this full time and she justified her low rates as bringing in more clients. She doesn't teach any group classes. I personally charge on the high end and I am not looking to take many private clients.
My private clients have found me on the web, through word of mouth, or occasionally someone comes from a group class. Usually people from the group classes are looking for just a one or two private sessions to address a particular issue. My regular private clients have physical or personal reasons that they want to work alone. For example, one is a paraplegic and she really needs help to get her body into the poses. I see her once a week.
Hope that helps. -

Re: Does anyone here teach yoga full time for a living
Tue, June 24, 2008 - 9:51 AMAgreed -- my private clients have specific reasons they want to work one-on-one. Most of them have injuries or physical conditions that make group classes difficult or ill advised.

Re: Does anyone here teach yoga full time for a living
Wed, June 25, 2008 - 1:22 PMWhen I first started teaching privates, I called around and found out what other people charge for private lessons/sessions: massage therapists, music teachers, coaches, personal trainers etc. When I began I put my rates lower in the range to reflect that I wasn't very experienced. I have gradually raised them over the last 4 years.
