I am curious to know if anyone has heard anything about this.... I've practiced yoga thruout my entire pregnancy she's due in just a few weeks. I am wondering if she is going to come out breathing in the yogi fashion of filling her belly as she inhales and deflating her belly as she exhales..... Is this something babies pick up from the womb? Or do they learn this as they are young lying next to yogi parents.... I have breathed in this manner since middle school so she has never really experienced me breathing in a shallow or more Western like manner... Just a thought that popped into my head and wondering if anyone had any ideas..... Thanx!

Re: baby yogi breathing
Tue, January 20, 2009 - 11:00 PMIt would be great, and informative, if you could give a report later about all the ways an expectant mother can influence the outcome in a positive manner from your own observations. -

Re: baby yogi breathing
Wed, March 18, 2009 - 7:24 AMWanted to comment back on what I have learned from my baby and her breathing;) My little girl is 1 month old today and I love her sooo. What I have noticed from her breathing is 1) little babies take many more breathes per minute than adults.... I am assuming their lungs are growing . When she breaths her whole diaphragm, stomach up into the chest rises...... So that is what I have noticed. Hopefully she will learn something from me as I practice yoga and dancing at home on a daily basis as she grows up..... -

Re: baby yogi breathing
Wed, March 18, 2009 - 9:46 AMThanks for that.
It seems that the 3rd, yellow, manipura chakra, found in solar plexus area,.... at the diaphragm, governs relations with others, food processing, breathing....
These processes are managed by mother in early stages of child growth. As the child develops, he takes over more and more awareness of these functions on his own.
Eventually, depending on the degree of independence and freedom the child is destined for, he can go into self-control to a yogic level, or even beyond.
You may want to encourage the child to develop his abilities. -

Re: baby yogi breathing
Fri, March 27, 2009 - 9:04 AMThank u for reminding me about the connection of 3rd chakras. At this point our 3rd chakras are fully connected and strongly attached it is hard for me to not be near her and I always want to hold her..... I have always believed it is the job of parents to encourage children to be themselves and encourage freedom

Re: baby yogi breathing
Wed, January 21, 2009 - 7:03 AMAll babies naturally breath diaphragmatically (deep breathing with the belly rising and falling) - this is not something that is learned from the parent. Thoracic breathing patterns manifest later on in childhood. Children who are taught breath awareness have a greater chance of retaining this natural pattern of diaphragmatic breathing into adulthood. -

Re: baby yogi breathing
Wed, January 21, 2009 - 7:36 AMaside from conventional modern scientific wisdom, there is a deep and ancient folklore tradition of intelligent communication between mother and unborn... not to say that this applies to average cases.
