I am trying to put together a warm up yoga sequence for the mornings.
I am NOT a morning person, so i"m trying to formulate something that can
wake my bum up and energize me to the fullest for the day ahead. Any ideas,
comments, sequences etc... would all be appreciated.

Namaste~

It would make sense to start with sun salutes. Backbends, twists, and inversions are also good for revving up energy. Just remember that your body will be stiffer in the morning, so take it easy on your muscles and make sure you get them really warm before trying any advanced postures.

What is the reason behind this morning stiffness I've always wondered?

        Rhia,

Ever sat in one position for too long? Like at the movie theater as you're lifting your body up from the chair and everything seems stiff, especially around the hips and lower back?

I think it's the same concept when we're sleeping, but on a larger scale. Just takes us awhile to get the joints back into motion. And I'm sure there are more biological explanations, but this is what makes sense to me : )

        Have a nice sleep tonight!

    Surya Namaskar.
Sun salutations are a very easy energizing morning practice.
A good place to start. You could take a few breaths, do four sun salutations, and finish with a few breaths.
This is about a five min. practice. You could add more later.

Sun salutations, yes! But it depends on your stiffness in the morning. I like to go slow with the breath and then gradually speed it up. I also may not do full chaturanga or upward dog at first, instead chaturanga modified with the knees and then cobra pose.

I would add Handstand (against the wall, of course) to the above recommendations. If you want to energize, you need to invert & I think handstand is the best for this.

Yeah, Inversions right when you wake up are like a cold shower while you're still in bed. At'll do the trick alright!

I'm just not an AM Yogini yet but what sounds best for me, as I sit in my chair and wonder what an early morning practice might feel like, are seated forward folds, followed by some seated side folds w/ arm lifts (like Upavishta Konasana but with one foot into groin) gradually working my way from the ground up to some more heat generating Postures. (Adho Mukha Svasana, Plank, Chatturanga, Urdva Mukha, throw in some leg lifts in Adho Mukha, maybe a nice knee bend leg lift for the hippies. . )

I CANNOT practice Pranayama in the morning without falling right back to sleep, even if I'm seated upright. I know! Pathetic, right?! I have to do something physical first, followed by Pranayama.

Ooh, but practicing uddiyana bhanda in the morning would be a good idea -- nothing in your stomach since you haven't eated since the night before. Great abdominal workout as well.

Thank you to ALL!!! I have been practicing yoga for about six years,
and i am an aweful morning person! don't know, could be a Pitta thing, but
I really detest mornings, and i wanted to see what others think and do on the subject.
I have been doing some sun salutations in the am for the past two weeks, it's a nice
start, i do think i will be trying some inversions to pump myself into gear. I thank you all
    for your input!

    namaste~

Since people mentioned being really sluggish when you first wake up - here's an idea to ease yourself out of bed - before getting out of bed, roll onto your left side and lie there for a few minutes - this opens the right nostril, stimulating the pingala nadi, which is energizing and warming and helps wake you up.
Then brush your whole body with a dry body brush.
Then if you're courageous take a cold shower, it's really great for the immune system too!
